It took a little more time than that. A week to be exact, during which time Holly worked on the house daily, determined to make good her promise to herself to move from the hotel as soon as possible.

The week, however, did not hold what she had envisioned, for upon their return to Silver Creek, Quint found a telegram waiting for him from the Llano County sheriff, requesting a meeting at Fort Mason. So Quint set out immediately, stopping only long enough for a clean shirt and a bite to eat.

She stood on the steps watching him ride away, the feel of his touch lingering on her arm where he had squeezed it and said, “This won’t take long.”

Not even a brief kiss. She knew he was thinking again of her reputation, what with all of Silver Creek on the porch beside them, but it wouldn’t have embarrassed her, not one whit.

Mavis linked arms with her drawing her toward the hotel, and half-whispered in her ear, “Holly, darling, you have a lot to tell.”

“It will have to wait, Mavis. Right now all I want is a hot bath and a long rest. I’m exhausted.”

Mavis smiled. “I can imagine. Two days and a night in the wilds, alone with Quintan Jarvis!”

“Mavis! How could you?” Holly swished past the proprietress and up the stairs, indignant, but with a burning on her cheeks she knew was obvious to all.

In her room she took off the soiled riding habit and threw on Mavis’s robe. Mavis’s this. Mavis’s that. Her entire life seemed to belong to Mavis O’Keefe. Would she ever again have anything truly her own?

A knock came at the door, and she opened it to admit Possum and the welcome sitz tub. She sighed. Mavis’s thoughtfulness.

“Glad you’re home safe, Doc,” Possum greeted her. “I’ll bring your hot water directly.”

She thanked him and fell upon the bed as he closed the door. How long would Quint be gone? Already her heart ached with loneliness, and her limbs were weak with longing for his touch.

Was he on a dangerous mission? What business did he have with the Llano County sheriff this time? And why did some other sheriff need Quint? Especially right now. She needed him now.

But she worked things out on her own, and when Quint rode back into town a week later, he was amazed at the progress she had made with the house.

“You’ve been busy while I was gone!” He walked in on her arranging furniture which Mavis insisted she bring from the attic of the hotel.

This time there was no hesitation on either part. They rushed into each other’s arms, eager to fill the yearning emptiness brought on by their separation.

Reeling with the impact of his lips, his mouth, his probing tongue—back where they belonged, consuming, devouring, ravishing her senses, Holly was conscious from the beginning of a very different feeling this time.

This time she had known he would come back to her. She had known he would rush to her side, smother her with his dizzying love.
